Jorginho has joked that he has already messaged Lionel Messi asking him to join Chelsea following his departure from Barcelona. The Italian’s performances for both club and country have him in the mix to win the Ballon D’Or trophy this year, with Messi expected to be one of his closest competitors for the award.

Referencing Messi’s impending departure from Barcelona, Jorginho confessed he hopes that the Argentinian doesn’t move to the Premier League, unless he joins him at Stamford Bridge. ‘I’ve already texted him (laughs). I’m kidding, I’m not even kidding about it. If he does not to come to Chelsea, let him go away (from the Premier League). I saw it (the departure) and I was like ‘ what happened?’. I was incredulous. I was wondering if it was fake news,’ Jorginho told TNT Sports Brasil.

The news that Messi is leaving Barcelona after 21 years at the club has rocked the football world. Barca wanted to keep their star man but blamed ‘financial and structural obstacles’ for his impending exit.

Jorginho is hotly tipped to challenge Messi for this year’s Ballon D’Or award.Messi is now widely expected to join French giants Paris Saint-Germain with Manchester City, another club who have the financial firepower to seal a deal for the now former Barcelona man, focusing on a move for Spurs striker Harry Kane after completing a deal for Jack Grealish.

Jorginho has won both the Champions League and Euro 2020 in recent months, something which has left him wanting to add more silverware to his collection. He added: ‘My focus is to raise these titles. It’s something gratifying and addictive. The Golden Ball, I don’t even comment. There’s nothing to comment. It’s just working on the field, lifting trophies and taking medals home. My focus is on that.’

Meanwhile, Chelsea are looking to bring former blue Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford bridge from Inter Milan, with a deal said to be close. The potential move excites Jorginho, who added: ‘A player like Lukaku, who has been doing great seasons, was champion in Italy, he’s certainly a player who would contribute a lot. Everything that adds up would be worth it. Let’s see the next episodes.’
