Tottenham Hotspurs are showing a keen interest in Juventus defender and Chelsea target Matthijs de Ligt, the Sunday Mirror reports.

The Dutchman has established himself as a key component at the heart of the Serie A giants’ backline with his leadership and commanding performances, having made 80 competitive appearances for I Bianconeri.

However, the return of manager Massimiliano Allegri has cast doubt on his long-term future since the Italian coach’s infamous trait of counting only on well-established experienced players.

The 22-year-old star has made six appearances for the Old Lady so far this season. He did not even start versus AC Milan and was only named in substitutes for the key match against Napoli. His existing Juventus contract ends in 2024 but has a €120 million exit clause that gets activated in the summer of 2022.

The club are said to be open to think about the sale of their asset and negotiate a lower price than the buy- out clause. However, he won’t come cheap, and it’d be difficult for the Lillywhites’ to lure Matthijs without Champions League football. Add to that a serious competition from Thomas Tuchel’s side, who are ready to fork out €120 million to secure the ace’s services.

With Antonio Rudiger running down his deal and Thiago Silva not getting any younger, the Blues need to strengthen their defensive roster with quality signings.
