Southampton are set to continue their transfer raid on the Chelsea youth sector after reportedly expressing an interest in the talented Blues midfielder Ben Elliott.

According to a recent report from the Sun, the Saints are competing with Brighton and Brentford for the 19-year-old midfielder’s signature in spite of Chelsea being interested in tying down their highly-rated star to a fresh deal.

They targeted the west London side’s youth system back in the summer transfer market and signed Dynel Simeu and Tino Livramento permanently before adding forward Armando Broja on a season-long loan.

Elliott could be the next player added to that list if Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side can tempt the youngster away from Stamford Bridge with a clear pathway to the senior team.

The Saint Mary’s Stadium outfit have proven that they can give young players a breakthrough into senior-team football having handed hugely valuable playing time to the likes of Tino and Armando, so perhaps more stars will now be open to sealing the same move from the UEFA Champions League winners to Southampton.

Elsewhere, Chelsea have handed a blow in their pursuit of Fulham attacker Fabio Carvalho as super-agent Jorge Mendes is allegedly trying to persuade the Portugal-born England youth international to join Liverpool over a number of other big names.
