Manchester United have this week confirmed Ralf Rangnick as the club's new interim manager, stepping in to take over until the end of the season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer departed Old Trafford.

United were challenging on four fronts last season, but came up short in all of them, finishing second in the Premier League to rivals Manchester City, and being knocked out in the semi-finals of the Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

New arrivals Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo increased expectations this summer, but United have struggled badly in the league and have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham.

That run of results ultimately led to Solskjaer's demise at United, and with Rangnick coming in to replace him, United fans are already getting excited about what the experienced coach could bring to the team on the pitch.

But it's also off the pitch that the appointment is providing intrigue. In 2012, Rangnick became the director of football for both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, overseeing the implementation of an exciting style of play, with some exceptional players such as Erling Haaland and Chelsea's own Timo Werner coming to prominence in the system.

With the January transfer window just a month away, thoughts naturally turn to the business clubs could get up to across the month. And Rangnick's past comments hint at the players he could target as boss of United, with Jude Bellingham - who has been linked with a move to both United and Chelsea in the past - ranking extremely highly.

"He’s an absolute top player; one of the best," Rangnick told the Athletic about Bellingham back in 2020. "I have rarely seen a 17-year-old playing at such a level. "We scouted him for 18 months at RB. He’s simply extraordinary."

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Rangnick name-dropped Haaland as well as a trio of players he worked with at RB Leipzig.

"Erling Haaland is sensational as well. Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara, Ibrahima Konate and Tyler Adams are all top level and will show that."

Rangnick's consultancy role in the future could be the key to a number of signings at United, with the club possessing the funds to complete deals for the likes of Haaland and Bellingham - something Rangnick has not been able to do thus far in his career.
