It spoke volumes that Thiago Silva was was only a second-half substitute away at Tottenham on Wednesday night but still garnered the full admiration of 6,000 Chelsea supporters after seeing their side reach the Carabao Cup Final. The gracious Brazillian tapped the badge, clapped and waved at those chanting his name in unison, a man quite clearly content in his current surroundings.

This comes only nine days after the club announced he had penned a new contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2023 and Chelsea fans will be hoping Silva's defensive peer, Antonio Rudiger, can follow suit. Rudiger, whose current contract runs out in the summer, has yet to have his future settled this month with conflicting reports suggesting he could be close to joining Real Madrid or remaining in west London.

“We’re in talks, it’s in good hands because I trust the club 100% and I have trust in my player. So it’s a no-problem situation for me, obviously also for Toni,” was Tuchel's assessment of the situation last week regarding negotiations.

Simon Johnson reported on Thursday for The Athletic that the club are holding discussions with Rudiger’s representative again. Johnson goes on to say that it is understood talks resumed in late December with Rudiger’s agent, and brother, Sahr Senesie. Whether the 28-year-old actually goes on to sign a new contract remains in doubt but this revelation can only be a positive step after the feeling that the contract stand-off was only leading to his departure, with claims even Real Madrid players were feeling confident he would be joining them in the summer. When thinking back to the affection felt for Silva whose future has been settled, the same can be said for the way supporters have fallen in love with Rudiger's combative nature and top-quality performances over the past 12 months.

Apart from the genuine defensive qualities that have rapidly made him one of the continent's best performing players in his position, those fiery intangibles that seem to fuel his great displays are a major factor in why supporters chant his name and are demanding Marina Granovskaia ties down the defender for the foreseeable future. Even with Chelsea's pursuit of other targets like Jules Kounde from Sevilla or Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus, the character of Rudiger is hard to replace, even if you are spending close to £100m.

Confirmation of Rudiger staying put alongside Silva would massively ease tensions heading into next summer where the need for new recruitment in defence would be severely lessened. Supporters gravitate and fall in love with characters like Silva and Rudiger because of their elite displays but also their show of fight on the pitch.

This may seem simplistic on the surface but in a football landscape where players and coaches feel more disposable, having a connection to those wearing your shirt still has great value. Although it may cost Chelsea more than they'd want, keeping ahold of Rudiger feels harder to argue against each time he scores a massive goal or puts in a superb defensive performance.
