Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted Chelsea are "checking the possibilities" over January transfers after the long-term injury to Ben Chilwell. The Blues are very light at wing-back and at centre half, though Andreas Christensen has returned to training this week after an old back problem flared up.

Left wing-back looks to be a particular area that the German needs to strengthen after Ben Chilwell was ruled out for the season with an ACL injury. The wing-back underwent surgery on the season- ending injury last week. Reece James is out for at last the next five weeks with a hamstring problem but Tuchel does have options at right wing-back, though on the left he has only Marcos Alonso. The club has been trying to bring back Emerson Palmieri from his loan spell at Lyon but has encountered some problems with the Italian defender a regular player for the French side this season.

Chelsea have been strongly linked with a move for Everton's wantaway left wing-back Lucas Digne and Barcelona's Sergino Dest. The head coach was asked about his January plans ahead of the FA Cup third round tie with Chesterfield on Saturday and admitted that he might have to dip into the market.

Tuchel said: "We are discussing and are in talks with the board and the scouting. We are checking the possibilities, as we always do. We are looking into the market and the possibilities. Not under the highest pressure but things have to make sense for us.

Tuchel was also asked about the return of Emerson, who has played 19 times for the French outfit so far this season.

"I will not give any details on that but in general I will not hide from the fact we have a long term injury with Chilwell and of course we know him and appreciate him as a player, as a person. "He had such a huge influence although not a lot of influence in minutes. "He is still a Chelsea player but it is not only what I wish for. We are looking into it."
