Chelsea took the surprise decision to recall forgotten winger Kenedy from his loan spell in Brazil with Flamengo on Thursday, a decision that even caught the player off guard. Kenedy's chances of making it in the first-team at Stamford Bridge appear to have long since evaporated, and after becoming a bit-part player back in Brazil, is now likely to be sent on loan elsewhere.

He made just four starts during the opening half of the season for Flamengo, something the Chelsea board have deemed to be insufficient, and a move elsewhere is now likely. But the 25-year-old admitted himself that he was surprised by the decision, hinting that it came out of the blue this week.

"I was taken by surprise. I found out yesterday (Tuesday) night around 11pm. Everything was very fast," Kenedy told O Dia, via SportWitness . "Chelsea had a contract with Flamengo. They asked me to present myself and I’m presenting myself. It was Flamengo that told me. I’m just fulfilling the contract."

Since arriving at the club, Kenedy has made just 27 appearances, spending time on loan with Watford, Newcastle, Getafe, Granada and, most recently, Flamengo. Writing in a statement on the club's official website, Chelsea confirmed the recall of the winger signed in 2015 for £7.2million.

"Kenedy has been recalled from his loan spell at Flamengo," they said. "The Brazilian, who can play anywhere on the left side of the pitch, returns to Stamford Bridge after five months at the Maracana during which he made 18 appearances and scored one goal. "In November he came on in the Copa Libertadores final, which Flamengo lost to Palmeiras after extra-time."

There has been talk that another left-sided Brazilian could make a return to west London this month as Thomas Tuchel looks to bring left-back Emerson Palmieri back from Lyon. However, the Blues did not insert a recall clause in the deal so are tasked with negotiating compensation with the French side, with football.london understanding an offer in excess of £3million to end Emerson's loan early has already been rejected.
