I think it is now pretty safe to assume that part of the reason why this process of Roman Abramovich selling Chelsea Football Club is taking so long is because it’s so massively important to him that the club goes to the right new owners.

Abramovich wants to leave his beloved Chelsea in safe hands and to do this, he is ensuring that any winning bidder has long-term commitments to running the club and not only that, he is making it legally binding that they do.

According to Sky News, Raine Group, who are handling the sale of the club for Abramovich, has asked the three Chelsea bidders to provide commitments that they will retain control of the Blues until at least 2032.

This would incorporated in the sale contract, making it legally enforceable. That’s ten years of commitments from all the investors involved in each group, and this is a very clever move from the Russian billionaire.
