Chelsea striker Timo Werner has admitted that Real Madrid's two goals on the night were "very good" as the £50million man singled out Luka Modric for special praise after his brilliant pass in the build-up to Rodrygo's goal.

Werner was given the vote of confidence from manager Thomas Tuchel who rewarded the former Bundesliga man with a surprise start against Los Blancos after his masterclass worthy performance against Southampton in the Premier League.

And that decision massively paid off with Chelsea's No.11 scoring what looked to be the winning goal at the time after some great footwork from the German under pressure eventually resulted in his strike deflecting in off Thibaut Courtois.

It was a performance that wasn't asked directly in Tuchel's post-match press conference but that didn't stop punditry duo Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole from lavishing praise on a player that was labelled as "unlucky" by Ian Wright at the weekend.

"We talked up Timo Werner following the weekend, and he hit the woodwork about three times that day, so he has found that little bit of confidence and in this game, he didn’t look like a player who had only played a few games over the past couple of months," Ferdinand said. no

"I thought he was very bright today, and I’m sure he has come in and done exactly what Thomas Tuchel asked him to do. He stretched them, was bold and was busy, and he got his goal and an assist."

Cole then followed up: "It is credit to his personality that he can come on and do this because we have seen his attacking in the first leg and have seen him fluff his lines.

But this leg, no Chelsea fan will be able to hold a grudge against him because he works his socks off, and this was as good as I have ever seen him in a Chelsea shirt this evening."

Werner has
reflected on his personal performance that could turn around his whole Chelsea career from now till the end of the season where he will have to make a big decision regarding his own future in England.

"When I celebrated [my goal] I thought this is it. We could have scored before that to make it 3-0 but the officials didn’t give it to us, it is a point you can talk about, but when I scored I thought we are through with this," he said to Chelsea FC.

"We nearly gave no chances to Madrid but in the end we have to say the goals they scored were very good. There was one moment in regular time when we were not like we were the whole game and Madrid have the quality to score against you and they showed it for the 3-1. I think it was a brilliant goal, a brilliant cross from Modric, hard to defend."
